Carly is a yellow crane engine who lives and works with her best friend, Sandy at The Maintenance Yard on the Island of Sodor.
Personality
Carly is a very helpful crane who is always there to lend a hook when her friends are in trouble. She also acts as an older sister figure to Sandy, and while the pair are generally inseparable, the speeder's tendency to go overboard often forces Carly to keep her manic antics in check. While bigger and generally more level-headed than Sandy, Carly admits that of the duo, she is the pair's muscle, whereas Sandy is the only one with the actual know-how to properly fix anything. Despite being far more mature than the rest of the Biggest Adventure Club, Carly is not above juvenile behavior, acting very flustered upon seeing Kenji during The Sodor Cup and hiding with the others during a Halloween storm.
Technical Details
Basis
Although Carly is a regular crane in the original series, she is actually based on a Chinese portal crane built by Xinxiang Kehao Machinery Equipment Co., Ltd, which is extensively used to load and unload at ports and material handling at shipyards and metallurgy industry. However, Carly has been heavily modified almost similar to a freelance design, but still retains original features. This design would later be used for Tess, though unlike Carly, she is based much more on the real crane.
Livery
Carly's main body is painted bright yellow. She has a dark blue section above her face and has black hazard stripes on her base.

Trivia
- Since her last appearance in Thomas & Friends, Carly has gained notable changes:
- She is now an engine and has an 0-4-2 wheel arrangement.
- Resultingly, all parts of Carly below her cabin area have been removed.
- She is much shorter.
- She gains headlights, buffers and couplings, her headlights doubling as her front buffers.
- The printed name on her sides has been removed.
- While it is unknown the exact reason for this change, it is most likely so that the English names for the characters will not appear in other dubs.
- The square behind her face is now blue.
- She has less rivets on her.
- Her crane arm design is heavily simplified.
- The window closest to her face is gone.
- She has blue irises.
- She has different eyelashes.
- She has a horn.
- She no longer speaks with a Liverpudlian accent in the English dubs.
- She has no doors to her cab despite keeping a door handle.

- In marketing descriptions, it incorrectly states that Carly is an All Engines Go exclusive character.
- According to Rick Suvalle, Carly was originally going to live at Tidmouth Sheds, along with Sandy.
- Unlike the other members of the Biggest Adventure Club, who are voiced by child actors, Carly is voiced by an adult, albeit only in the US dub.
- In the fourth season episode, Creepy Crawly Courage, it is revealed that Carly has a fear of skunks.
