Sandy is a pink rail speeder who lives and works with her best friend, Carly at The Maintenance Yard on the Island of Sodor.
Personality
Sandy is a very energetic speeder, and while not the biggest engine on the island, she still enjoys the company of her much larger friends, many of whom recognize that she is a valuable asset to their community. Sandy always participates in a game if she can, and one of her favorite aspects of a race is seeing who the winner is. As such, she'll follow someone closely to see if they'll win or not. Sandy is also very good with small repairs, swapping out Gordon's broken coupling with a new one in seconds without difficulty. Additionally, she is very inventive and likes to build all sorts of gadgets, such as Percy's Biggest Adventure Machine and new wheels for Skiff. She also enjoys playing in mud and sand, particularly the latter. Sandy is always ready to help out wherever possible, but at times she can be a bit over-enthusiastic and will often go overboard and try to make a complex solution for a simple problem.
Technical Details
Basis
Sandy appears to be based on a Motorcar, which were self-propelled vehicles used for track maintenance. She seems to most closely resemble those made by Fairmont Railway Motors of Fairmont, Minnesota. Unlike almost all real life examples, Sandy can extend a robotic arm from the front of her chassis and/or a winch, plus other tools.
Livery
Sandy's wheels and cab are painted coral-pink. Her hazard stripes are painted black and her cab door is painted yellow. Her buffer beams are painted gold. She also has an aqua green roof and silver lights and fittings. She is also lightly weathered, and has two pieces of aqua-green tape on her side. Additionally, towards the back of her roof, an orange warning light can be seen.

- The name "Sandy the Rail Speeder" is trademarked.
- Sandy has a variety of different tools that extend from the front of her chassis.
- As revealed in the first season episode, Goodbye, Ghost-Scaring Machine, Sandy built The Biggest Adventure Machine.
- According to Rick Suvalle, Sandy was originally going to live at Tidmouth Sheds, along with Carly.
- Sandy's horn sound is a stock sound effect of a bicycle horn commonly used in cartoons.
- Additionally, the same horn sound would later be used for Sir Topham Hatt's car in Sodor Mystery.
- Sandy, along with Bruno, are two of Daniel Share-Strom's favorite characters.[2]
